An USB Floppy Drive is a small self-powered drive that connects to a computer directly through a USB port. It's both Mac and PC compatible, so you can transfer files between both Macs and PCs. They are supported on all public machines, although some USB Floppy Drives require a user to install drivers before use. USB Floppy Drive can hold any type of data, including excel, jpeg, video, and text files. USB Floppy Drive are also commonly referred to as key drive, thumb drives, jump drives, USB Floppy Drive and pen drives.

USB Floppy Drive are meant as a way to get files to and from multiple computers. They are NOT for backups. We strongly encourage users to backup files to CD-RW or CD-R disks or zip disks.
USB Floppy Drive come with varying amounts of memory. You may purchase a flash drive that is approximately the size of a zip disk, or 256MB. Also, you have the option of purchasing a few 32MB drives instead of a single 256MB drive.

Advantages of USB Floppy Drive

1. Flash-Based Storage

Flash memory is the ubiquitous media for removable storage and USB portable storage drives and the most critical component in the devices' Bill of Material (BOM). Toshiba introduced the much less expensive NAND flash (compared to NOR flash), and it has become the most common kind of silicon for removable storage. M-Systems leverages the non-volatile nature and the small size of flash, then optimizes it with its flash management system (TrueFFS) thus stabilizing it to emulate a hard disk drive in speed and reliability.

2. Increased Performance and Reliability

While CD-RW and DVD-RW are great media for backing up mission critical data, these are simple dumb storage media and not as rugged as USB floppy drives. A scratch or a bend can destroy them and with it, a users' data. They also have the challenge of slow read and write performance especially compared to USB floppy drives.

3. Acceptable Cost

USB floppy drive is popular because the price range is reasonable. USB floppy drives with their future computing capabilities become even more cost effective and a natural solution as both a floppy drive replacement for data storage/distribution, and as a platform for new hardware and software extensions.

4. Easy-To-Use

The USB floppy drive is growing in popularity in part because of its usability, or ease-of-use. It is easy to launch, portable and can be used with any USB port, which is now standard in PCs. Elements of M-Systems' Smart DiskOnKey platform are incorporated in the leading BIOS and O/S manufacturers allowing instant recognition and driverless access with little effort from end users. They just plug it in and automatically a new drive appears ready for use. Even Smart DiskOnKey's new security features are exceeding usability tests.

5. Reliable Components and Security

As the category evolves, reliability, durability, and security are crucial features. Data reliability will become more important as these devices start being used as more than storage. y

6. Security

Clearly, security is also a major concern for any data storage device. Keychain storage poses unique challenges, as confidential information can easily fall into the wrong hands if the device is misplaced or stolen. Password protection and other security features, such as encryption, are critical. End user ease-of-use is almost as important as the security itself. If the interface, performance or dependability is in question the security will not work and end-users either won't use the security components, if that is an option, or won't use the device at all.

7. Design

These drives need to be sleek, rugged, and appealing to the eye - a fashion statement. The USB Floppy Drive is one of the few storage devices that do not require a reader. There is no need for external cords or additional cables. The form factor can be varied and appeals to both form and function. Depending on the usage it could be fashion accessory, a promo piece forming into a cartoon character, a wooden Monte Blanc look and even rubberized for rugged adventures. They are also designed to incorporate hardware solutions such as MP3s or cameras. Lexus is one of the first to turn the simple yet powerful technology into a marketing tool.
